Six Eternal Months

"Heaven help us, look where we are. We have a president - commander-in-chief of the armed forces, ostensibly the leader of the free world - whose every word is suspect. President Trump is an inveterate liar. He dismisses provable facts as "fake news" and invents faux facts of his own that bear no relationship with the truth. He simply cannot be trusted."

Eugene Robinson
The Washington Post

Today is July 20, 2017, six months in to what is undoubtedly the most mind-bendingly corrupt, unhinged and disgusting administration in American history - with forty-two very long months left to pass before it's all over. This unprecedented political catastrophe cannot possibly continue for that length of time; in fact, I'm more convinced than ever that it will not last. Incredibly, thanks to the current extreme makeup on the House of Reprehensibles, we will be forced to endure - at the very least  -  another twenty full months of this nightmare. This is what happens when you send a psychologically deranged sociopath and  common pervert to the executive mansion. Are you the least bit surprised by what is happening to this once great country? You shouldn't be.

Idiot Nation.

a number of weeks ago, Senator Elizabeth Warren joked that the era of Donald Trump seemed be passing by "in dog years". That wasn't an exaggeration. Yesterday, an anonymous friend of Trump's oldest son reported that Donald Jr. "can't wait for these four years to be over". He's not alone. We'll just leave it at that.

Expect the rest of this fucking maniac's tenure to be a continuing constitutional crisis. Yesterday, in a garbled and raving interview with the New York Times, the Oaf of Office hinted that if Special Council Robert Mueller, the man currently charged with getting to the bottom of the Trump/Putin scandal, tries to look into the Trump family's financial ties with the Russian government and the rampant organized crime that has swallowed up Russia and the Russian people, he will be discharged from his duties. Oh yeah! If that happens, Weeda Peeple will shut this place down. Expect the next six months to be very interesting; Very interesting indeed. I once believed that nothing could ever possibly outdo the utter madness of the Bush era. Isn't that ironic?

As it is everyday, the insanity of this president was on display in jolly abundance when he attended the first working session of his new "election commission" whose purpose is to investigate how that EVIL Hillary Clinton was able to steal all of those popular votes from the Donald during last year's campaign. The collection of pathetic sycophants that make up this committee have been tasked with the chore of getting to the bottom of this phantom "controversy" and coming up with "solutions" to the "problem". Who wants to make a little wager that those solutions will involve passing laws that will make it even harder than it already is for the traditional progressive constituency to cast their precious ballots on Election Day 2018? Who wants to further bet that those solutions will be upheld when challenged at the Supreme Court level? Citizens United was nothing compares to what these treasonous assholes have planned for us. Have an umbrella at the ready. The shit storm is about to descend. These are interesting times.

We have stupidly saddled ourselves with a president who is not only an agent of a hostile foreign government, he has financial ties to the Russian mafia that go back at least two decades. Does that sound a tad extreme? It's already been revealed. The story is unfolding bit by bit, day by day. You've missed it? Turn off Fox Noise. It'll do you a world of good.

Manafort
In exactly six days Donny Jr. and Paul Manafort (the former head of the Trump campaign with a warehouse full of Russian ties of his own to contend with) are scheduled to appear before the Senate committee looking into this mess. To make matters even more interesting, both of them will be testifying under oath. I'd hate like hell to be in the shoes of either one of these knuckleheads. I'm sure that Junior has already been promised a pardon by dear old dad; I don't expect too much substance to be learned from his testimony. But Manafort is an entirely different story. He has no reason to be loyal to - or to expect loyalty from - a man who a year ago threw him under the bus for nothing more than reasons of gross political expediency. Why the hell would he have to display any kind of loyalty to Mein Trumph when his very existence as a free man is on the line? Maybe he'll surprise us. Maybe he won't. This crowd is very predictable in their unpredictability.

What we are living through is unprecedented. As troubled as Dick Nixon was; as heart-breakingly dumb as was George W. Bush - neither man was certifiably insane. Donald Trump is something else indeed. As I noted on this site on the day after the election, this is going to end very badly. If you didn't see this coming, you weren't paying attention. I was paying attention.

This Country Deserves Much Better than Trump

Here is a link to read the piece that is quoted at the top of this one. The Pulitzer Prize winning Robinson is the best of the best. He can also be seen as a frequent commentator on MSNBC - that den of commie liberals.

I am no fan of Robinson as he's a dedicated leftie. I also feel he goes too far with his complaints about Trump. That said, the latest from Trump is frustrating about Sessions. Trump has little understanding of the law and cares only about his own interests-- forget the talk of country first. He cannot keep his mouth shut when he should. I did not vote for him for a lot of those reasons-- not that I'd have seen Hillary as good for the country. Why don't we get good choices???

Rain, HOW can someone go "too far" complaining about Trump? Hillary while a horrible "candidate" would have been a great "President". The two things require completely different skills. Trump was a wet dream of a "candidate, but as POTUS? Not so much...

We NEED more "dedicated lefties" in charge of the nation.

BTW, technically, JESUS was a "dedicated leftie"

Seriously, with all the damage Trump and the GOP has done, the ONLY solace AMERICANS get is seeing them try and explain away the obvious TREASON.

I LOVE places like this and other social media. We get to see conservatives turning themselves inside out to come up with excuses.

Mr. Robinson nailed it. And he's right...this presidency's departure from norms and values, i.e., democratic values and Constitutional law, "must be opposed with sustained passion".

Fight him and resist him -- and anybody supportive of him. Indeed, it is the only way out of the wilderness.

"Why don't we get good choices???"

Because the powers-that-be don't want you to...and really, could care a less about what you want. Obviously you still haven't figured out that our elected representatives do not represent us.

JG, you are hilarious, my friend. We have not followed the constitution for decades now. And the corrupt and incompetent teachers' unions have done such a poor job educating our kids about civics, the constitution, and non-revisionist history that we are now doomed to actually being an idiot nation, as our kind host would say. Of course, the fact that parents don't demand better for their children and hold teachers accountable by being involved with their kids' education only ensures that we will continue to have the Overton window shift to the left even more. Idiot nation indeed!

JG, you are SO good at meaningless catchphrases like "neoliberalism". Hillary had the most experience of any candidate in history, AND clearly would not have been the national embarrassment that is Trump.

She certainly wouldn't be opening our government up to Putin while also trying to cut 35 million people out of healthcare.

She wouldn't be embarrassing and shaming the nation on the international stage.

She wouldn't be gutting the EPA, FDA, BLM, etc.

And best of all, SHE WOULDN'T BE CLAIMING TO BE INNOCENT WHILE TRYING TO PARDON HERSELF!! rotflmfao!!!!

JG, his over generalities, hyperbole, fear mongering in just that quote 'every word is suspect. President Trump is an inveterate liar. He dismisses provable facts as "fake news" and invents faux facts of his own that bear no relationship with the truth. He simply cannot be trusted.' It says he gets his news from leaks and left wing media. So what provable facts? A lot of what the left sees that way comes from their own version of Fox, Breitbart, WND, etc. Because it's been regarded as the only news, the left approves the NYTimes, Washington Post, etc. especially when that establishment mouthpiece says what it wants.

I get it that lefties believe in what it says, I lost my faith during the primary with headlines that often the article would finally get around to saying were unproven. I don't know where to get reliable facts right now and try to stay away from the overblown rhetoric about any of them.

When Mueller was appointed and reportedly appointed big time Hillary and Obama lawyers, did it look like he was going for truth or on a hunt for anything that could impeach Trump and give us Pence, talk about from the frying pan to the fire.

I am hearing now that Russian mobsters gave Trump the election. Keep in mind the only emails revealed were not Hillary's 33,000+ deleted but emails that revealed the dark side of Clinton-- none of which have ever been denied as untrue. So truth is unfair?

While many of us did not vote for Trump, based on what he said he'd do, enough did to give him the vote and my bet is they voted based on issues important to them. To ridicule those people is to ignore this country is very divided on what should be done regarding healthcare, taxes, climate change, environment, nationalism/globalism, immigration, environment, and so forty. Russia, try or not, did not likely cause Hillary's loss-- the democratic party helped her with that with their fixing their own primary and her switching positions on things like TPP and XL just to win over Bernie voters. Who could trust her on anything or any in the establishment, GOP or Dem? Many of us voted for her anyway based on issues. Even we did not expect the establishment to go after Trump as they have and try to deny a democratically elected president a chance to try out his ideas. We didn't expect them to attack his family, go for a spew of leaks that who knew if they were true as always anonymous. The bureaucaracy in DC, many unelected, want him gone and lying is not beyond them. And Trump with his bombastic, bull in a china shop, possibly sociopathic personality helps them do it.

It's a bad time for anyone who wishes for a legitimate news source. For me, Robinson, who sometimes used to be on MSNBC isn't helping his reputation with anyone who isn't already on the far left and in bed with their agenda.

At 3:39 PM, Blogger Dave Dubya said...

I don't understand, Rain. Robinson can go too far complaining about Trump, but Trump hasn't gone too far to deserve it? I share JG's confusion.

It's interesting how a moderate voice regards Trumps words as the problem, while ignoring his horrible actions like obstruction of justice, pandering to Russia, giving them top secret info, not to mention his far Right agenda. Perhaps his corporatist, science-denying, pro-polluter cabinet of billionaires seems moderate to you.

Nothing troubling about Sessions either? Coretta King understood the man, but when Liz Warren read her letter she was silenced by McConnell. Wouldn’t Sessions’ history of racism, and restoring civil asset forfeiture, and cracking down on the war on drugs with maximum sentences for non-violent offenders qualify as issues of concern to a moderate?

Hillary is a neo-con, corporatist "moderate", if such terms are compatible.

Say what we will about Hillary, but with her in the White House, climate change would matter. Women's rights would matter. The environment would matter. The Supreme Court wouldn't be so far Right as it is now. It would be more moderate. That's a good thing, right? I’m glad you had the sense to vote for a moderate over the white nationalist extremist creep.

Robinson is "too leftist"? Yet you supported Bernie? I don't get it.

But Mr. Paine approves. I would think that should be a warning flag. Like you, Mr. Paine has voiced no criticism of Trump's politics, only his personality. His personality is the perfect distraction to cover his and his party’s actions.

But never mind. I guess Paine's and your deeper understanding of politics far surpasses mine, I'm afraid. I’m just another leftie without a clue.

Clucky once again makes a FOOL of himself, and STILL can't tell us HONESTLY what conservatives have done for the poor and middle class the last 50 years.

At 4:55 PM, Blogger Rain Trueax said...

Ruth, Hillary most qualified? What about Arab Spring? Did you feel what she did with Libya was wise? There is a lot of smoke out there about the benefits their foundation donors received. To believe there was no fire takes a lot of faith-- especially after she destroyed all those emails with the excuse they weren't of interest. If they weren't, why not let the FBI etc. have them?

I did not like all that Bernie would have done as I am not a far leftie but his stand on trade deals and the XL worked for me. He was not bound to a party, which is why the DNC did all they could to rig the primary. Some of what Trump ran on, like nationalism (which does not have to mean racism), I thought made sense-- take care of our people, our workers, and then we can do more for others. I grew up in a working class home, father laborer and mother stay at home mom, who more or less supported the democratic party for years because they seemed to be on the side of the working class. I don't buy that anymore. Dems talk it. They don't do it.

I did not vote for Trump due to concern for his stand on issues like the environment as well as his seemingly unstable personality-- think bull in china shop. I though did not really want more of Obama's policies; so I was not happy voting for Clinton, who I believed would say anything to get elected and valued money and celebs too much. I would not have been happy no matter who had won and don't know that she'd have been better, given her warmongering talk. I didn't like that she let Donna Brazille give her questions for the debates. Wasn't that dishonest on her end? But, for me, the choice was not a good one-- and I always vote. I just hope there will be better choices in 2020 with democrats who act responsibly, figure out how to pay for what they offer, and look at the whole picture-- not just one class of voter. With both parties moving toward their extremes, I am not hopeful.

On Robinson, I am going by what he said there-- which seemed to be appealing to the left-- as that is what they want to hear. He is not a journalist as such but more a commentator and he is a leftie. I quit though listening to MSNBC when it became a hate Trump 24 hour, supposedly news network, so haven't heard him for quite a while.

Finally, as a left leaning moderate, I have not been happy with the direction our universities have gone with control all on the left (except for religious schools) and the way they are pricing the middle class out of going without huge debts. Being an old woman, I remember when it was different and don't like limiting who can speak on campus, the laxity for standards, and pushing a liberal agenda (You get an A if you go protest Trump from one prof). I worry what that will mean for our future. Will we have an educated elite expecting the uneducated to do their labor-- when they don't need it done by those undocumented (for cheaper wages all around). I see the liberal agenda as one of not creating a path to citizenship (when they had their chance with Obama as president and control of Congress) but talking how much they care for the undocumented in their sanctuary cities, as being more of the under the table mentality that there has been too much of.

And I know to say that will have some saying I have to be a conservative, and on some issues, I am-- like paying for what I want done. The problem is conservative has ceased meaning what it once did. I have to change my registration from Democrat to Independent, which in Oregon will mean I can't vote in primaries but I can't stay a Democrat either. I feel like, and have for some time, a political orphan. When we donated to candidates in '16, it was Democrats, but individuals not the party (and yes to Bernie but zero to Hillary)

I don’t want to pick on Rain, but she is proving to be less moderate than she claims to be. Or to be more generous, she is simply less informed, and more misinformed, than she should be.

It certainly seems Rain is rushing to defend Trump against the nasty leftist media. No wonder Mr. Paine applauds her “moderate” positions.

Let’s be clear. Rain the “moderate” has bought into the Right’s #1 propaganda point. The evil “liberal media”. How dare they call out Trump’s lies? That’s apparently Robinson’s “far left” ideology, not the frickin’ TRUTH!

Rain rejects Robinson’s, “He simply cannot be trusted” as some “fear mongering” bias, worse than that spewed by the propagandists of the Right. Good God.

Perhaps Rain can educate us all on Trump’s trustworthy claims and honest statements.

Rain goes further and makes the mistake of buying the Right’s false equivalence. Anyone saying mainstream, corporate media has an equal bias to liberalism and the Democratic Party as FOX/Breitbart/WND do to conservatism, Trump, and the Republican Party has drunk the Right’s “fair and balanced’ kool-ade. She is unaware that they have her in their pockets now. She cannot be moderate while regurgitating far Right propaganda. Sorry.

She voted for Hillary. So did Bush Sr. So did other honest and sane Republicans. That can be fairly called a moderate position. Hillary is quite moderate compared to Trump.

Rain is buying into the Trumpist “big time Hillary and Obama lawyers” BS. Trump is the real victim here, you see. That’s moderate, all right. Just as “moderate” as Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

“I am hearing now that Russian mobsters gave Trump the election.”

“I am hearing”. Yes, Rain and Trump are “hearing” the same things. Why am I not hearing that? No evidence was offered to support this. Why is that?

Russia interfered. Fact. Trumpists lied about contacts with Russians. Fact. Trumpists colluded with Russians. Fact. Trump spilled top secret intel to Russians in the Oval Office. So why investigate?

Rain is defending Trumpist attacks on journalism and the “many unelected, want him gone and lying is not beyond them”.

Yeah, those darn news organizations and evil federal employees are the liars, not Dear Leader.

Poor Donald! Everybody is lying about him.

Obviously Rain is not a moderate if she believes Right wing propaganda and Trump over journalism. “...Did it look like he was going for truth or on a hunt for anything that could impeach Trump...” Right. Trump’s “witch hunt” claim resonates with Rain. It’s not like Trumpists lied under oath about contact with Russians, amirite? Good God, no wonder this country is divided. So many of are so easy to fool and manipulate.

Rain obviously fears the “far left agenda” of factual reporting and exposing lies.

”It's a bad time for anyone who wishes for a legitimate news source.”

This is from one who legitimized the Right’s “liberal media” meme, believes CNN, the Post and Times are as biased as FOX, and rejects the very idea that Trump is a liar and cannot be trusted as “leftist bias”. This is not moderate, this is drinking the koolade, folks.

Here’s a clue. Colbert wasn’t just joking when he said, “Reality has a well known liberal bias.”

This won’t compute to those who condemn journalists for disputing “record inaugural crowds, 3 million illegal Hillary voters, no contacts with Russians, the Chinese climate change hoax”, and the thousands of other lies from the Right.

Here’s a partial list of Trump’s lies. Of course, if you trust Trump, then forget it. You have already surrendered your reason to false beliefs and gullibility

Chuck "Majormajor" Morre: "Has it ever occurred to you the possibility that YOU are a dangerously radical? In reading your posts to date I have yet to read you state thst someone was too far left."

That's probably because, unlike the corporate-fascism that's becoming more prevalent with each passing year, I do not view liberalism as a danger to my constitutional liberties or physical health.

T. Paine: "JG, you are hilarious, my friend. We have not followed the constitution for decades now. And the corrupt and incompetent teachers' unions have done such a poor job educating our kids about civics, the constitution, and non-revisionist history..."

So typical of you, Mr. Paine, to blame this country's problems on the teachers unions instead of the cozy and inseparable union of our elected government officials with multinational banking and other corporate entities.

Every time I've brought up the legal fiction of corporate personhood, hopeful for at least some kind of kindred agreement from you concerning its obvious blatant defilement of the very Constitution you claim to revere, I never see an affirmative response from you. Your silence only leads me to the conclusion that you're a proponent of this most egregious shakedown of our constitutional rights.

Mozart1220: "JG, you are SO good at meaningless catchphrases like 'neoliberalism.'"

Meaningless?!? I will not even enter into a debate with you until you take the initiative to step away from the once traditional political spectrum of liberalism vs. conservationism, agreed upon 40 and more years ago, and start seeing the world as it truly is today. Your ideas are antiquated at best.

Dave Dubya: "Hillary is a neo-con, corporatist 'moderate', if such terms are compatible."

Exactly! Neither Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton are (or could have been) capable ambassadors to the Constitution, or the health and welfare of the overwhelming majority of the citizens of this nation. Unfortunately, most people contributing to this blog haven't figured this out. Still.

First, I find it laughable regarding Mr. Mozart's assertion that Hillary was so qualified. Please give me anything of meaning she did as first lady, other than to stand by Bill in his scandals? Please give me any significant legislation she sponsored as a senator or any legislative achievements she had. Please tell me of all of her accomplishments as Secretary of State. I can tell you of numerous international scandals that are directly tied to her "leadership". When asked by a reporter, even she responded that her greatest accomplishment was the untold thousands of miles she traveled around the world. So what. I know rich retirees that have accomplished that!

Oh, and the fact that she would be a champion for women's rights, as Mr. Dubya stated, is a joke. I suppose if those women weren't conservative, living in the Middle East, or didn't fall under the predations of her husband, then maybe she would be supportive. If "women's rights" are code for abortion on demand, then I agree. Otherwise, not so much.

As for Trump, I applaud his work and attempts to strengthen our borders and security. I am happy that he got Gorsuch on the SCOTUS. I am happy that he is cleaning up the VA to better provide for our veterans. Other than that, I cannot think of anything that I am happy with him and his performance thus far.

I am disgusted by his boorishness and lack of statesmanship. I am not happy with many of his guttings of environmental protections, notwithstanding the whole anthropogenic global warming charade. I am frightened with how he might handle Kim Jong Un in North Korea. I am not happy with his lack of leadership in repealing Obamacare. I am disgusted with his bombastic attitude and seeming lack of integrity.

All of that said, he is sadly still a better alternative than the intrinsically corrupt and failed Hillary as president. If the left finds just cause to impeach him, I wish them godspeed in doing it. I suspect President Pence would finally put some semblance of stability and decorum back into the oval office, so the quicker they can get on with it, the better.

And THREE investigation by a GOP congress already proved there was no "Cheating" on behalf of the Clinton camp, but there IS a VERY serious and growing investigation into Trump colluding with Russia to steal the 2016 elections, and it will probably take down 3/4 of the GOP.

I don't defend Trump as such but see a lot of unfairness in today's media with headlines that scream one thing while the article is different. Trump though creates his own disasters (as does Hillary frankly). Maybe soon we'll have Pence, a religious ideologue, not sure lefties will like that better. Frankly, the drama is old for me.

I am through commenting where it takes so long and then suddenly there it is, after things changed and I have no idea if someone commenting is referring to my most recent post or an earlier one. It's funny what people believe and how they process information.

Rain, I know that you and I don't see eye to eye on all issues, but I respect your thoughtfulness when it comes to looking at each of the individual issues when making your observations and opinions known and not simply blindly following any party line.

To our friend, Mr. Dubya, that makes you a political adversary. If you don't believe every line item of the far left Democrat party talking points, then you are obviously a closet right-wing sympathizer, authoritarian-fascist, and a secret Trump supporter to him. An open mind and eschewing any leftist political orthodoxy are a sign of foolishness at best and a lack of intelligence at worst, according to him.

The interesting thing is that I once thought that Mr. Dubya himself was similarly open-minded enough to look at each individual issue on its own merits and that we could and did agree on some of them. What I failed to notice back then was that it was only when I agreed with him on the left that we were finding common ground.

Rain,
I apologize if my statements make you uncomfortable. No malice is present.

I admire Mr. Paine's good intentions to defend you, but I know you don't need his help. As you know, I was not attacking you, but the far right biases behind your fears and misunderstandings.

Mr. Paine is again making it his duty to accuse me of intolerance and failure to examine issues. True to form, he fails to cite any specific case where I am in error. He seems to believe I called you an "authoritarian-fascist, and a secret Trump supporter".

I did no such thing, of course. You may be susceptible to some far Right dogma, but you are not a true believer.

Unsupported blanket accusations are a common tactic of far Right "debate". Mr. Paine is likely annoyed with my pointing out where he is in agreement with Trump. I'm one of those fools who thinks believing, or agreeing with, Trump is grounds for deeper examination of an issue.

Of course the moderate corporatist Democratic Party is "far left" in his imaginings.

If you don't believe every line item of the far left Democrat party talking points, then you are obviously a closet right-wing sympathizer

Mr. Paine avoids discussing the issues I raised for a reason. It is easier to demean my intentions and facts without having to offer a reality based argument. Mr. Paine once again forgot I am also a Second Amendment supporter.

it was only when I agreed with him on the left that we were finding common ground.

I don't need to bore you with any more flaws in his tirade.

If someone is falling for the propaganda and false equivalences of the far Right, I will note that influence for what it is. I would do the same for anyone falling under the sway of a cult of anger, hate, paranoia, racism and fascistic nationalism.

Call it tough love.

Rain, you are my type of moderate!

That should tell us something.
